Bears claw through Patriots 11-3

Bridgewater, NJ - The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 11-3 before 5,211 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening.

The Bears took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Catcher Manny Mejia singled and scored on an RBI double by third baseman Victor Gutierrez. Second baseman Bobby Hill was hit by a pitch and Gutierrez would score on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Ramon Castro. Center fielder Keith Reed followed with a two-run home run (14).

Newark added a run in the top of the fourth inning. Left fielder Ruben Mateo doubled and scored on a ground out for a 5-0 lead.

Somerset cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. First baseman Josh Pressley hit a solo home run (20) to left field. Catcher Jason Belcher singled and later scored on an RBI single by left fielder Gera Alvarez.

The Bears extended the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Castro singled, Reed walked, and right fielder Jose Herrera singled to load the bases. First baseman Willis Otanez followed with a grand slam, his first home run of the season, to give the Bears a 9-2 advantage.

Newark added two more runs to the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Hill singled and scored on an RBI double by Castro, who later scored on a fielder's choice.

The Patriots scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the score 11-3. Belcher doubled and scored on an RBI double by designated hitter Travis Anderson.

Bears starter Jose Garcia (5-3) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings pitched. Patriots starter Steve Kelly (5-8) suffered the loss, allowing nine earned runs on 11 hits in six innings pitched.

The 2008 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue at home on Sunday night with a 5:05 pm game against the Newark Bears. The game includes Soft Toss Baseballs (1st 2,000 fans) courtesy of NAPA Auto Parts. The game is also Beatles Day with a live concert before and after the game courtesy of Almost Fab.
