Bears add seven new faces for 2006-07

HERSHEY - The 2006 Calder Cup Champion HERSHEY BEARS announced today the signing of defenseman Timo Helbling, center Matt Hendricks, center Petr Taticek, defensemen Deryk Engelland, Donny Grover, Tyler Sloan and left wing Peter Vandermeer for the upcoming 2006-07 season. The announcement was made today by BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst.

Helbling split the 2005-06 season with the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning and the Springfield Falcons, notching 21 points in 60 games in the AHL A former sixth round pick of the NHL's Nashville Predators, Helbling has 187 games of AHL experience entering 2006-07.

Hendricks, a former fifth round pick of the Predators, scored 13 goals in 56 games last season for the Rochester Americans. He has previously played for Lowell Lock Monsters and the Milwaukee Admirals in his AHL career His 13 goals last season were a career-high.

Taticek, a former first round pick of the Florida Panthers in 2002, was acquired late last season by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins where he scored four goals in 17 regular season games. The 22-year old played made his NHL debut with the Panthers last season.

Engelland skated in 37 games last year for the BEARS, recording 77 penalty minutes. The former sixth round draft pick of the New Jersey Devils returns for his second season in a HERSHEY uniform.

Grover made his AHL debut last season with the Lowell Lock Monsters, skating in 10 games. He played the majority of 2005-06 with the Danbury Trashers, scoring 10 goals in 66 games.

Sloan played in two playoff games for the BEARS in 2006 against the Portland Pirates in the conference finals. He played 124 games for the Syracuse Crunch from 2001-2005, and also played four games for the Manitoba Moose last season.

Vandermeer has accumulated 2,035 penalty minutes in parts of nine American Hockey League seasons. Since skating with the Philadelphia Phantoms from 2001-2004, he piled up 310 PIMS for Grand Rapids in 2004-05, and 276 more minutes for Hamilton last season.
