
Columbus Signs Defenseman Filip Novak

Syracuse, NY (August 9, 2006) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman Filip Novak.
Novak, 24, spent the past season with the Ottawa Senators and its AHL affiliate Binghamton Senators. In 64 games with Binghamton, he netted eight goals and 44 assists for 52 points with 58 penalty minutes and was named to the 2006 PlanetUSA All-Star team. He played in 11 games with Ottawa and recorded four penalty minutes.
The Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, native played three seasons in the AHL with Binghamton and San Antonio and recorded 19 goals, 73 assists and 221 penalty minutes in 192 career games. He was named to the 2003 AHL All-Star team and 2003 AHL All-Rookie Team. He missed the entire 2003-04 season due to an ankle injury.
The New York Rangers first pick, 64th overall, in the 2000 Entry Draft, Novak was traded, along with Igor Ulanov, New York's first- and second-round selections in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft to the Florida Panthers on March 18, 2002, in exchange for Pavel Bure and a second-round pick in the 2002 Entry Draft.
Novak played three seasons with Regina of the Western Hockey League from 1999-2002. He tallied 36 goals, 128 assists and 270 penalty minutes in 171 career games. He was a WHL East First All-Star team selection in 2002, a WHL East Second All-Star team selection in 2001 and played in the 2000 CHL Top Prospects Game. Novak also represented the Czech Republic at the 2002 World Junior Hockey Championships and had 0-2-2 and four penalty minutes in seven games.
