ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (June 10, 2003) â Trey Beamon roped a sixth inning grand slam to lead the Atlantic City Surf over the Nashua Pride, 7-4, Tuesday evening at the Sandcastle.
Down 3-2 in the sixth inning, Pat Burns reached base on a fielder's choice, followed by singles off the bats of Raul Marval and Chad Gambill to load the bases.
Beamon bashed a first-pitch offering from Nashua starter Paxton Crawford over the right field wall for the first grand slam by a Surf player at the Sandcastle this season, giving the Surf a 6-3 lead.
Beamon had just three total RBI this season prior to that at-bat.
The Pride had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after a Mitch Melusky double plated Tim Garland, who led off with a walk. After a single by Glenn Murray advanced Melusky to third base, Joe Kilburg drove him in on a fielder's choice.
Nashua added its third run on a solo home run by David Francia to lead off the third inning.
After Nashua first baseman Damian Sapp's solo homer in the top of the eighth pulled the Pride within two runs, Atlantic City's Raul Marval provided an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning with a solo shot of his own.
Surf starter Anthony Chavez (4-3) tossed seven and two-third innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking two to earn the victory.
Randi Mallard tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his league-leading ninth save of the season for the Surf, which improve to 17-19 on the year.
The Pride now fall to 22-14 on the season.
ON DECK: The Surf and the Pride will play the second game of the series on Wednesday, June 11, at 6:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle. Splash Bobblhead Dolls will be given to the first 1,000 fans, sponsored by Pepsi.
