Beach Bums Rally For Wet Win Over Southern Illinois

MARION, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums rallied from a 4-1 deficit to pick up a 5-4 win over the Southern Illinois Miners on a wet Saturday night at Rent One Park.

Southern Illinois grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Beach Bums starter Brett Bostelman. Kevin Koski led off the game with a triple and scored on a single by Eric Suttle.

Traverse City tied the game in the top of the second inning. Kyle Maunus led off with a walk and Mike Epping and Zack Kalter followed with singles to load the bases. Patrick Perry drove in the run with an RBI fielder's choice. Willie Keene connected on a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to once again give the Miners the lead at 3-1. Eric Suttle hit his third homer of the season leading off the third to extend the Miners lead to 4-1.

The Beach Bums rallied back to tie the game. Mike Epping connected on a two-run homer off of Nick Starnes in the top of the fourth inning to bring the Beach Bums within 4-3. Kyle Maunus walked to start the frame and was along for the ride on Epping's sixth homer of the season. Starnes exited the game in the fifth after Jeff Brown doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Goetz to tie the score.

Against All-Star reliever Jake McMurran, the Beach Bums grabbed their first lead of the contest in the top of the sixth at 5-4. Zack Kalter led off the frame with a triple down the right field line. Brad Miller followed with a walk and the go ahead run scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Brown that proved to be the difference in the game.

Pete McEneaney recorded the win, the first of his professional career. McEneaney worked 2.2 innings in place of Brett Bostelman to earn Beach Bums Player of the Game honors. Jeff Williams faced the minimum in the ninth to notch his ninth save in 10 tries. Traverse City finished with eight hits in the game. Mike Epping and Zack Kalter each had a pair of hits. Kyle Maunus walked twice and scored twice.

The Beach Bums (30-20) will conclude the first half of 2008 with a 3:05 pm afternoon game at Rent One Park tomorrow against the Miners. RHP Jon Haldis (1-0, 3.60) will make his second start for the Beach Bums against the Frontier League leader in strikeouts RHP Chris Bird (6-3, 3.67) of Southern Illinois.
