Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City Beach Bums have announced the signing of infielder Kenny Smith.
Smith was selected in the 20th round of the 2007 MLB draft by the Texas Rangers after hitting for an incredible .390 average with 72 runs, 24 doubles, 20 home runs, 84 RBI, and 14 stolen bases while making only 5 errors all season on the infield. For his performance, Smith was named an NCAA DI Second Team All-American, consensus Southern Conference Player of the Year, as well as Western Carolina's Student-Athlete of the Year. Smith also collected all-tournament accolades while hitting .316 with a pair a homers, a double and five RBI at the NCAA Baseball Championship Chapel Hill Regional.
After being drafted by the Rangers, Smith was assigned to the class short season-A Spokane Indians of the Northwest League, where he hit .240 with 5 doubles, 2 home runs, 12 RBI and 3 stolen bases in 36 games. His play was rewarded with a late season call-up to the class-A low-A Clinton Lumberjacks of the Midwest League. Between the two levels, Smith made just 4 errors in 32 games at 3rd base, good for a .935 fielding percentage.
"Smith will really help solidify our squad offensively and defensively," said Jason Wuerfel, the Beach Bums' Director of Baseball Operations. "He is a terrific athlete and all-around player. He can beat you with his bat and his glove. He can also play multiple spots on the infield if we get in a pinch with an injury or need to give a guy a day off."
