Beach Bums Explode Late to Roll Past Chillicothe

CHILLICOTHE, OH - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored nine runs in the final three innings to roll past the Chillicothe Paints 12-2 on Saturday night at VA Memorial Stadium.

For the second straight night the Beach Bums opened the scoring in the first inning. Mike Epping led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on an RBI groundout by Steve Young. Chillicothe tied the score in the bottom of the first. Travis Garcia singled with two outs and scored from first on a double by Adrian Cantu.

Two more runs came in against Chillicothe starter Ryan Flanigan in the top of the second inning. Kyle Maunus and Eric Newton singled to begin the frame. Maunus moved to third on an error by the Paints catcher and Newton moved to second on an error by Jeff Vincent in center. Both runners scored on consecutive wild pitches by Flanigan.

The Beach Bums blew the game open in the top of the seventh. Patrick Perry and Kyle Maunus singled to start the frame. After back-to-back strikeouts Jeff Brown drew a walk to load the bases. Edwin Walker relieved Ryan Flanigan and walked Brad Roblin to force in a run. Mike Epping followed with a grand slam, his second homer in as many nights, to give the Beach Bums an 8-1 lead. The Paints made it 8-2 when Jeff Vincent scored on an RBI single by Joe Spiers.

The rout continued in the ninth inning against Tommy Vrzal. With two outs Steve Young singled and moved to third on a double by Zack Kalter. Patrick Perry drove in two runs with a single and scored when Kyle Maunus pounded his eighth homer of the season to make it 12-2.

David Nathanson threw seven innings in his final start of 2008. He allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out one. Jared Locke tossed the eighth and Matt Trausch threw the ninth. Kyle Maunus matched a Beach Bums record by tallying four hits. He was 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Mike Epping posted a pair of hits and drove in four while Patrick Perry also finished with a pair of hits in the game. As a team Traverse City finished with 12 hits.

The Beach Bums (48-44) will gain ground on someone in the wildcard race as Rockford was playing at Gateway. LHP Ryan Gehring (5-8, 2.79) takes the ball for the Beach Bums in the final as they go for the sweep. Chillicothe counters with All-Star RHP Andy Polk (7-5, 4.31). Gametime is 6:35pm.
