
Beach Bums Edged by Lake Erie

AVON, Ohio - The Traverse City Beach Bums suffered a 5-4 loss to the Lake Erie Crushers in the opener of a three-game series at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday nihgt.
Traverse City was able to strike first with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to open a 2-0 edge against Lake Erie starter Brent Lysander. John Alonso homered to open the inning, parking a 1-2 pitch on the lawn in left field. Mike Victor drew a one-out walk and scored when Kyle Maunus tripled to center on a two-strike offering.
Kevin Reese, who started for the Beach Bums, allowed a solo homerun to Lake Erie's Gordie Gronkowski, his sixth of the season, in the bottom of the fourth to cut the edge to 2-1. The Beach Bums plated two more runs against Lysander in the fifth. Andrew Stafford and Mike Epping singled to start the inning and were sacrificed to second and third. John Alonso deposited a 2-0 pitch into center to score both runners and give the Beach Bums a 4-1 lead. Lysander threw six innings and did not factor in the decision for the Crushers.
Lake Erie rallied to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jodam Rivera began the inning with a bunt single and went to second on a failed pickoff. He scored when Drew Saylor reached on a three-base error. Andrew Davis laid down a safety squeeze to score Saylor and Luke Hetherington followed with his fifth homer of the season to knot the score.
The winning run crossed in the seventh against Reese, who was hit with the loss despite working a season high 6.1 innings. He walked one and struck out three. Arden McWilliams drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a wild pitch and was sacrificed to third. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Brad Griffiths.
The Beach Bums had eight hits in the game. Two of those belonged to John Alonso who drove in three of the four runs. Kyle Maunus and Al Barbato also had two hits in the game. David Hurst threw the final 1.2 innings for the Beach Bums.
The Beach Bums will continue the series with Lake Erie tomorrow night in a 5:05pm contest. RHP David Nathanson (1-4, 5.27) will take the ball for Traverse City. Nathanson had his scheduled start pushed back two days. Lake Erie counters with their ace, LHP Paul Fagan (5-1, 3.25). The contest can be heard live on The Fox FM.
