River City Rascals News Release

O'FALLON, MO - The Miners erased a six game winning streak for the Rascals, topping River City 9-4 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark Saturday night. Southern Illinois led 8-0 at one point in the contest.

The Miners (20-14) jumped early on Jake Laber, scoring four in the third and three more in the fourth. Former Rascal, Andrew Sweet, plated Jereme Milons from third on a groundout to short for the second out. Randy Molina followed with a grounder to second, that JoJo Batten mishandled that should have ended the inning. Instead, Travon Jackson doubled home a run and Michael Higa scored two more with a single to give the Miners a 5-0 lead.

Southern Illinois continued the offensive outburst, scoring two on a Brad Miller two run home run in the fourth. Milons made it back-to-back shots with his seventh home run of the season.

The Rascals (22-11) didn't have much of an answer against Ryan Bird (6-0). Scott Houin broke up a no-hitter in the fourth, leading off with his second home run of the season. Scott Robinson touched up Bird in the seventh, blasting his seventh long ball to make it 8-2.

Bird lasted 7.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. It was his seventeenth straight win dating back to last season, improving upon his Frontier League record.

Laber (4-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing thirteen hits and eight runs (five earned) in 4.2 innings.

River City did make it a 9-4 game in the eighth on a Robinson two RBI single against David Stringer, but failed to get any closer.

The Miners got their final tally in the top half of the eighth on Milons' second blast of the night, his eighth overall this season.

Robinson finished 2-4 with the home run and three batted in while Houin finished 2-3 with a home run.

The Rascals look to start up another winning streak tomorrow night against the Miners. Daniel Howard (2-2) will oppose Brett Scarpetta (2-0) on the bump. First pitch is set for 6:01 p.m.
