BC Lions Take Nine in 2017 CFL Draft

(Vancouver) The BC Lions Football Club enjoyed an eventful evening at the 2017 CFL Draft table picking up nine future Leos including first-round selection Danny Vandervoort out of McMaster University. The third-overall pick had been acquired from the Montreal Alouettes just prior to training camp last year in exchange for quarterback Vernon Adams.

A skilled receiver who topped numerous draft rankings at his position, Vandervoort (6'2", 200) hauled in 148 passes for 2,572 yards and 29 touchdowns over 32 career games for the Marauders.

The Lions went to the defensive side of the ball with their second selection of the first round (seventh overall) snagging lineman Junior Luke (6'2", 288) from the University of Montreal. The Quebec native notched 46 solo stops and 11 career sacks over 32 games for the Carabins.

In the second round, the Leos added to their talented depth of Canadian offensive linemen by choosing Jeremy Zver (6'5", 295) from the University of Regina with the 16th overall pick. The 2016 Canada West All-Star spent four years at Regina appearing in 25 games at left tackle.

The Lions went back to the University of Montreal for their third-round choice (24th overall) and picked-up linebacker Frederic Chagon (6'4", 233). The 2016 U-Sport (formerly known as CIS) Second-Team All-Star appeared in 26 games over four years for the Carabins recording 65 solo tackles and five sacks.

In the fourth round, the club scooped-up some valuable defensive back depth by acquiring Nate Hamlin (6'0", 195) from Carleton University with the 33rd overall selection. Born in Ottawa, the athletic defender notched 126 tackles and four interceptions over 30 games for the Ravens.

Another defensive lineman was added to the roster in the fifth-round (42nd overall) as Edward Godin (6'2, 252) from Laval University joins the ranks of the Orange and Black.

Dakota Brush (6'3", 240) from Mount Allison was the Lions sixth-round pick (51st overall) and will likely line up at fullback for the club in training camp after also seeing offensive duty at receiver for the Mounties.

With an NFL mini-camp invite from the Kansas City Chiefs in his near future it's no surprise linebacker Jordan Herdman (5'10", 228) fell back in the draft, but the Lions took a flyer on the SFU product in the seventh round (60th overall).

With their final 2017 CFL Draft selection the Lions went back on offence and selected Mitchell Hillis (6'0", 185) from the University of Saskatchewan.
