VANCOUVER, B.C. June 15, 2002—BC Lions players will be hitting the books on Monday, June 17, to celebrate the start of a great summer of reading and writing with Grade 1 Sir William Macdonald Elementary students.

Vancouver Superintendent of Schools Don Goodridge, Chairperson Barbara Buchanan will join Lui Passaglia, BC Lions Director of Community Relations and BC Lions players to launch the summer Read Write & Roar Literacy Program.

Over 32 Vancouver schools are participating in the Read, Write & Roar program. The program was developed to promote reading and writing, and encourage family literacy. The BC Lions partnered with Literacy BC, The Vancouver School Board and the Vancouver Public Library to create Read, Write & Roar and to motivate elementary school students from grades 1-3 to read and write over the summer holidays.

Students receive a Touchdown Card to fill with titles of books they have read over the summer, and a Summer Journal to write their own stories and experiences. The program concludes in September where students have a chance to win a visit to their classroom by a BC Lions player and team mascot or tickets to BC Lions games by returning their reading cards and journals.
