B.C. Lions News Release
VANCOUVER, B.C. October 21, 2003 â BC Lions General Manager and Head Coach, Wally Buono, today announced that he has added import defensive back Perry Carter and non-import defensive back Brock Balog to the practice roster.
The 6'1", 195-pound Carter is a native of McComb, Mississippi. He joins the Lions after being released by the Montreal Alouettes in February of 2003. The 32-year old Carter spent the 2002 season with the Montreal Alouettes, where he played in 15 games, making 35 defensive tackles. While with the Alouettes last season, Carter also made one interception, and had three pass knockdowns. He was released by Montreal on February 25, 2003. Prior to his time in Montreal, Carter spent two years with Edmonton (2000-2001), playing in all 18 games for the Eskimos in 2001 and making 24 tackles to go along with one fumble recovery and four pass knockdowns. In 2000 he started the first nine games of the season for Edmonton making 18 tackles and two interceptions before missing the rest of the season with an injury. After his time in Edmonton, Carter tried out for the NFL's Detroit Lions, before being released and signing with Montreal.
Carter also has extensive NFL experience. Originally a fourth round (107th overall) draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 1994, the former Southern Mississippi star spent the 1995 season on the Kansas City Chiefs practice roster. He then signed with Oakland and played the final four games of the 1996 season with the Raiders. In 1997, Carter played in all 16 regular-season games for the Raiders, and made 44 tackles and seven pass knockdowns. In 1998 he played in six games for the Raiders, making seven tackles. He was released by Oakland during the preseason in 1999.
Balog, a 6'1", 210-pound native of Calgary, Alberta, comes to the Lions after spending time on the Edmonton Eskimos practice roster this season. He was signed by Edmonton as a free agent on March 26, 2003. Originally a sixth round pick (45 overall) of Calgary's in 2000, Balog tried out for the Stampeders in 2000, before being released and returning for his final year at the University of Calgary. He returned to the Stamps in 2001, spent the majority of the year on the practice roster, after playing in the first two games of the regular season. He later appeared in all three of Calgary's 2001 playoff games, including their Grey Cup win over Winnipeg. He then spent parts of last season on Calgary's practice roster, before being signed by the Eskimos. He was born on August 8, 1977.
