Tom Pate Award Nominees Announced
Published on October 21, 2003 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release
Tom Pate was a former CFL player with the Hamilton Tiger Cats in the 70's. He was much more than just a player. Tom had a unique combination of outstanding sportsmanship and dedication to his team, the league and the community.
Sadly, both his career and life were short-lived. In October 1975, at the age of 23, in a home game against Calgary, he suffered a brain aneurysm in the fourth quarter and died two days later.
In honour of his memory, the Canadian Football League Players' Association, as voted by the players, nominate one individual from each team that embodies the same qualities as Tom Pate; outstanding contributions to his team, his community and his sport.
The 2003 Team nominees for the Tom Pate Award are:
Anthony Calvillo Montreal Alouettes
Aubrey Cummings Ottawa Renegades
Michael Jenkins Toronto Argonauts
Joe Montford Hamilton Tiger Cats
Khari Jones Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Chris Szarka Saskatchewan Roughriders
Dan Comiskey Edmonton Eskimos
Willie Fells Calgary Stampeders
Steve Hardin BC Lions
The Winner of the Tom Pate Award will be announced with all other C.F.L. Awards at the Players' Awards Evening on Friday, November 14, 2003.
