AKRON, Ohio - After the first game of the 2009 season saw 14 runs cross the plate, the second game only saw three runs score on a cold night in Akron. It turned into a battle of the bullpens and the Aeros managed two runs on the Baysox relievers which was all they needed to seal a 2-1 victory
Jake Arrieta made his Baysox debut and was nearly unhittable, going four innings striking out eight while walking two, giving up only an infield single to Beau Mills before departing. His outing drew praise from manager Brad Komminsk.
"He threw very well," Komminsk said, "We didn't execute a few plays early and we gave him a few extra outs early and ran his pitch count up a bit early but overall he threw great and had all his pitches working for him."
The 23-year-old Arrieta focused on getting ahead of hitters more in the spring, and that work payed off as he managed to strike out the side in the first inning and retired two out of three on strikes in the second.
"My mission tonight was just to throw strikes and keep my team in the game," Arrieta said, "I think I did a pretty good job of that." The Baysox struck first when center fielder Dave Krynzel took the Frank Herrmann offering and crushed it over the wall in dead center field to put the Baysox on top 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Aeros answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lefty Bobby Livingston came on to replace Arrieta, and retired the first two before giving up an infield single to Jose Costanza and a walk to Carlos Rivero. Beau Mills then came to the plate and took the Livingston pitch right back up the middle, scoring Costanzo and chasing Rivero to third while Mills took second on the throw. Livingston settled down, striking out Carlos Santana to end the threat without any further damage.
The Aeros took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning off Baysox reliever James Hoey struggled with his control. Hoey walked Nick Weglarz and Jared Goedert to start the inning, and John Drennan layed down a sacrifice bunt putting runners at first and 2nd with one out. Josh Rodriguez lifted a fly ball down the left field line just deep enough to score Weglarz and give the Aeros a 2-1 lead.
Aeros lefty Ryan Edell shut down the Baysox for two innings before Vinnie Pestano came on to close the door on the Baysox with a 1-2-3 ninth giving the Aeros the victory.
