Aerodynamics...

Battery Powered...Battery mates Hector Rondon and Carlos Santana paced the Aeros to an Opening Night victory yesterday, as Rondon carried a shutout into the sixth and Santana homered and drove in four runs en route to Akron's 9-5 win over Bowie. Rondon, making his Double-A debut, struck out six of the first 13 Baysox batters and finished just one out shy of recording a quality start, allowing one run and five hits in 5.2 innings. Santana staked his starter to an early lead with a booming three-run blast in the bottom of the first, tacked on a single and a sacrifice fly later in the contest, and also made a number of nice plays defensively on balls in the dirt.

Four Score...Although Rondon was making a 3-0 deficit look a lot larger to the Bowie hitters, Akron broke the game open with a six-run explosion in the bottom of the fourth. DH Niuman Romero started the rally with an innocent roller to third that Melvin Dorta couldn't make a barehanded play on, and reliever Ryan Rodriguez then walked the next two hitters to load the bases with no one out. CF Jose Constanza brought home the first run of the inning with an RBI single to left before SS Carlos Rivero plated a pair with a knock of his own, and 1B Beau Mills and Santana drove in runs with a single and a sac fly, respectively. Romero then capped the frame with his second hit of the inning, an RBI single to score Nick Weglarz.

Save Me...Even though RHP Vinnie Pestano will handle the ninth-inning duties for the Aeros this year, RHP Randy Newsom still notched the save last night by retiring the final four hitters in order after entering the game with two runners aboard and the potential tying run waiting in the on-deck circle. The save was Newsom's 48th in an Aeros uniform, extending his franchise record to exactly twice as many as second-place Mike Soper. Newsom also set the Akron single-season record for saves last year with 29, breaking Wilmer Montoya's mark of 23 set back in 1996.

Walk This Way...The Aeros took full advantage of Bowie's generosity on the hill last night, working the Baysox for nine walks in the game and then driving in five of those runners in what turned out to be a four-run margin of victory. Leadoff man Jose Constanza set the tone early by winning a marvelous nine-pitch battle with Sox starter Jason Berken to open the bottom of the first, and Carlos Rivero followed with a full-count walk of his own before both men scored on Santana's home run. In the big fourth inning, Akron drew three walks and all three runners came around to score.

Nick Adenhart...For those that haven't heard, Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a car crash early this morning. I got to know Nick when we were in Class A Rancho Cucamonga in 2006, and for a 22-year-old (and this extends to any 22-year-old) to pass away just breaks my heart. If you have a moment, please say a prayer for Nick's family and friends.
