New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Brad Emaus continued his hot-hitting by smacking a three-run double, and Rei Gonzalez earned a victory in his Eastern League debut with six strong innings of work as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats downed the New Britain Rock Cats, 4-3, on Thursday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
The Fisher Cats (2-0) erased a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Emaus (3-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI) laced a bases-loaded double off losing pitcher Jay Rainville into the right-centerfield gap, scoring Brian Jeroloman (2-for-4, 2B, 2 R), Sean Shoffit (0-for-2, BB, R) and Todd Donovan (1-for-3, 2B, BB, R, RBI) for a 3-1 lead.
Emaus is 6-for-8 with four doubles and seven RBIs in his first two career Double-A games.
Gonzalez (1-0) yielded a home run to the first batter of the game, Rock Cats' centerfielder Rene Tosoni (1-for-5, HR, RBI), to fall behind 1-0. But the right-hander settled down, holding New Britain (0-2) to two runs on five hits in six innings to register the victory. Gonzalez walked one and struck out one.
Rainville (0-1) suffered the defeat by allowing three runs -all unearned- in three innings. The righty gave up three hits, walked three and struck out three.
New Britain trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Brian Dinkelman (0-for-3, SF, RBI).
New Hampshire tacked on an important insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning against reliever Frank Mata. Jeroloman led off the frame with a double down the right field line, and Donovan drove him in by ripping a double down the leftfield line, increasing the Fisher Cats' lead to 4-2.
On the first pitch in the top of the ninth inning, Rock Cats' leftfielder Matt Moses (2-for-4, HR, RBI) greeted Fisher Cats' reliever Rommie Lewis with a deep home run inside the rightfield foul pole, drawing New Britain to within 4-3.
Lewis responded by recording back-to-back strikeouts of Dinkelman and Tosoni before Adrian Martin induced a game-ending fly out from Steve Tolleson (1-for-5, 2B) to notch his first save.
The Fisher Cats and the Rock Cats play the third game of their four-game series at Merchantsauto.com Stadium Friday night at 6:35pm. A pair of left-handers will duel when New Hampshire's Fabio Castro (0-0, 0.00) matches up with New Britain's Ryan Mullins (0-0, 0.00).
