Connecticut Defenders News Release

BOWIE, MD- The Defenders took a one-run lead into the ninth inning but couldn't hang on as the Baysox took game one of the series, 4-3.

Bowie struck first as Adam Cowart walked in the first run of the game as the Baysox took a 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless third, the Defs got even in the top of the fourth as Kyle Haines ripped an RBI single to bring home Carlos Sosa who doubled to start off the inning. After three and a half, the game was knotted up, 1-1.

Bowie re-claimed the lead in the fifth inning as former Defender Jeff Nettles singled in Carlos Rojas from second.

In the top of the sixth, Connecticut re-tied the game at 2-2 when Sosa lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Ben Copeland from third.

The Defenders took their first lead in the eighth on another sac fly by Sosa who brought home Antoan Richardson, as Connecticut claimed a 3-2 advantage.

Bowie's offense was dormant through most of the game, but they reached back for something special in the bottom of the ninth. Sergio Romo, who was perfect in save opportunities coming into the game, took the mound for the Defenders. John Tucker led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by Carlos Rojas and scored the game-tying run on a single by Lou Montanez. With two outs, and a runner on third, the previously 0-for-4 Nolan Reimold dug in and with one struck of the bat sent a game-winning double into the right-center field gap as Bowie edged out Connecticut, 4-3.

The Defenders will take on the Baysox Saturday evening at 7:05pm. Connecticut will return to the friendly confines of Dodd Stadium on Monday, May 19 at 6:35pm. Tickets are still available for the contest at ctdefenders.com or by dialing the ticket office at (860) 887-7962.
