Sanford Mainers News Release
The Mainers could smell it. The final playoff spot in the East Division was only a half game out of the Mainers reach. Once four games out, the Mainers were able to win their last five games and six of their last ten to bring themselves that close. However, on Thursday night, the New Bedford Bay Sox made it a little harder for the Moose, ending their win streak by a score of 8-4.
The Bay Sox came right out of the gate swinging, taking an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Mainers starter Scott Heath. Alex Witkus started the offense with a double down the right field line and into the corner. Lane Richards reached on a fielding error by Robert Wayman at second. With runners at second and third after a Ryan Plourde ground out, Chris Travers walked to load the bases. Chris Shaw hit the second double of the inning allowing both Witkus and Richards to score the game's first two runs. Max Nogay singled up the middle pushing across Travers.
Just a half inning later the Mainers answered, tying up the game when they loaded the bases on a Matt Verrier single, a walk issued to Nate LaPointe and a fielding error putting on Wayman. Kyle Moore singled through the right side scoring Verrier and on the next at bat LaPointe came across to score on a wild pitch, but was joined by Wayman when Bay Sox catcher, Travers, over threw Danny Tyson who was covering the plate.
It was all tied up at three going into the bottom of the second, but the Bay Sox pulled ahead 4-3 when Kyle Seiders tagged from third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Richards.
The Mainers were shut out over the next couple of innings, but were able to tie it again in the sixth. Moore hit an infield single to short and then advanced to second when the initial throw got past Shaw at first and out of play. Sam Balzano collected his third of four hits on the day when he singled up the middle allowing Moore to come into score.
In the bottom of the seventh and the eighth, the Bay Sox combined for four more runs to retake and double their lead 8-4. Nogay hit an RBI double to left to put his team up 5-4 and then Mainers reliever Travis Landry walked in a run with the bases loaded. An inning later Shaw hit his second double of the game plating both Plourde and Travers.
Thursday's game marks the beginning of a four game road trip for the Mainers. On Friday the Moose will complete their season series against the Newport Gulls at Cardines Field. Game time is set for 6:35pm. EJ Ashworth will make his second start against the Gulls in Newport in as many trips.
