Valley Blue Sox News Release

HOLYOKE, MA-The Blue Sox managed to overcome a difficult defensive day thanks to late heroics by second baseman Joseph Carcone as they split a doubleheader with the division-leading Keene Swamp Bats, falling 5-0 before winning 3-2 in the nightcap. In the first game, the Blue Sox committed four errors, including two on one play, as part of a 5-0 loss where they trailed from the second batter of the game-a triple by second baseman Matt Ford that plated third baseman Zach Lucas who had led off with a double. Jordan Kutzer took the loss in the first game, allowing five runs-three earned-on seven hits in five innings, giving up one walk while fanning three; David Sosbee took the win on six shutout innings, holding the Sox to just two hits with six strikeouts, though he did walk four. In game two, the Swamp Bats scored first in the third, as catcher Jonathan Scott singled and then advanced to third on a fielding error and scored when third baseman Robbie Cafiero singled; however, Holyoke scored when shortstop Matt Reida walked and scored on a triple by third baseman Brendan Hendriks. Holyoke appeared to take the lead on a deep fly to center by first baseman Justin Morhardt, as Hendriks tagged up and beat the throw, but a bad call by the umpire ended the frame instead. In the fifth, Keene took another lead, which they held through the sixth when Holyoke managed back-to-back singles by right fielder Vahn Bozoian and designated hitter Sal Annunziata; after a sacrifice bunt, second baseman Joseph Carcone blooped a single to right to put the Blue Sox in the lead.
