Battle Creek Battle Jacks News Release
The Bombers (8-9, 24-28) drop both games against the Rafters (9-9, 24-29) Sunday afternoon at C.O. Brown, 5-1 and 9-6 respectively.
Battle Creek has now lost four straight games and five of their last six heading into the All-Star break.
Game one resumed in the top of the fifth inning after getting postponed due to rain Saturday night. The game started with the bases loaded and just one out for the Rafters in a 1-1 tie.
Mitch Mallek delivered an RBI single for Wisconsin Rapids on the first pitch of the resumed game and the Rafters never looked back.
Battle Creek only had four hits in the final five innings of play and took a 5-1 loss. Starting pitcher, Jordan Rhodes (1-2), took his second loss of the season.
Game two began with a wild first inning as the Rafters jumped to a quick 4-0 lead on five hits off starting pitcher, Walter Talcott. Four earned runs are the most Talcott has given up all season.
The lead didn't last long though. Battle Creek bounced back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first on one hit and three errors by the Rafters. One run came across on a sacrifice fly by Zach Gartner, and the one hit was a Jalen Thomas RBI double, his thirteenth double of the season.
Gartner was the player of the game in game two, going 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly.
After a couple scoreless innings, Wisconsin Rapids added two runs on two hits and an error in the top of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.
The Rafters weren't done yet and tallied three more runs on three hits and an error in the sixth to extend their lead to 9-4.
Kevin Hahn allowed five runs in his 3.2 IP, but just three of them were earned. Hahn is now 3-2 in 2018 after taking the loss Sunday.
Battle Creek chipped into the five-run lead on a two-RBI double from Alec Cargin and cut the deficit to 9-6.
Chase Wheatcroft got the last four outs of the game for the Bombers, but Hunter Waldis pitched a scoreless ninth for Wisconsin Rapids to end the game.
Battle Creek travels to Kenosha to take on the Kingfish Thursday, July 26 after the All-Star break. The Bombers will play another double header with first pitch set for 4:30 EST.
