Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. Fresh from their victory over the Seattle Sounders in the semifinal of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup the Charleston Battery travels to Atlanta Saturday for a 7:55 PM match versus the Atlanta Silverbacks (REAL 1340 AM). The Battery defeated Seattle in a penalty-kick shootout Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium and advanced to the national championship game for the first time in franchise history.
This will be the third and final regular season meeting between the Battery and Atlanta this year. Charleston defeated the Silverbacks 2-0 on May 24 behind goals from Randi Patterson and Aaron King. Atlanta reversed that result on August 1 winning 2-1 in a game played in Atlanta.
Atlanta (8-6-7, 31 points, 5th) enters the game on the back of a 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps in a game played in Vancouver last weekend. The Silverbacks are led by striker Mac Kandji who has scored 10 goals so far this season and added five assists.
Atlanta has been busy in the transfer market over the last few days adding former Charleston Battery defender Brent Sancho to its roster. Atlanta also traded winger Ansu Toure to the Miami FC Blues for Sean Cameron; Cameron is recovering from injury and will not be available Saturday night.
Charleston will be without Marco Reda who serves a one game suspension on Saturday. Charleston (10-7-5, 35 points, 3rd) will be looking to return to winning ways in the league, the Battery's last USL1 win came versus the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday August 3 at Blackbaud Stadium.
Charleston played a two-match road series last weekend losing 2-1 in Minnesota then salvaging a tie in Portland with a late Lazo Alavanja goal.
