Battalion Prevails 5-3 over Peterborough

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - Mark Shoemaker's power-play goal at 19:51 of the second period proved the winner as the North Bay Battalion defeated the Peterborough Petes 5-3 in Ontario Hockey League action Thursday night.

Mike Amadio scored one goal and added two assists and Mike Baird, Miles Liberati and Brett McKenzie also scored for North Bay, which won for the first time in three games to move its won-lost-extended record to 7-7-2 for 16 points, fourth in the Central Division.

Cam Dineen earned three assists for his first multi-point game in the OHL, while goaltender Jake Kment, in a fourth consecutive start, faced 27 shots before 2,052 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Eddie Schulz, Hunter Garlent and Steven Lorentz scored a goal apiece and Matthew Mancina made 19 saves for the Petes, who snapped a six-game losing streak with a 6-3 road win over the Kingston Frontenacs in their previous outing last Friday night. Peterborough is 6-7-3 for 15 points, fourth in the East Division.

Liberati put the Troops in front 2-1 at 7:20 of the second period, blasting a left-point shot between Mancina's pads. Max Kislinger and Justin Brazeau earned assists on defenceman Liberati's sixth goal of the season before Garlent tied it at 10:17, knocking home a loose puck from the lip of the crease.

Penalty killer McKenzie restored the Battalion's lead at 17:54 on a terrific individual effort. McKenzie gathered the puck at the North Bay blue line, charged into Petes territory, dodged Dominik Masin and ripped the rubber over Mancina's right shoulder. Brett Hargrave and Dineen had assists on McKenzie's fifth goal.

The Troops had a two-man advantage when blueliner Shoemaker made it 4-2, drilling the puck from the top of the left-wing circle over Mancina's blocker. Shoemaker's third goal was assisted by Dineen and Amadio.

Lorentz pulled Peterborough within a goal at 10:57 of the third period, redirecting Matthew Timms's drive from inside the right point, and Mancina went to the bench for a sixth attacker with 2:09 to play, but the Petes were unable to generate a scoring chance.

Amadio, who fired the puck off the crossbar in the 13th minute, finished the scoring into an empty net at 19:53. Riley Bruce collected the lone assist on Amadio's eighth goal.

Schulz opened the scoring at 7:51 of the first period when he ripped a shot over Kment's glove from the edge of the left circle.

Baird replied on the power play at 18:01. Dineen hammered a shot off the right post from inside the blue line, and Baird swatted home the rebound from the lip of the crease. Amadio also assisted on Baird's second goal.

Peterborough held a 12-6 edge in shots, but Kment produced solid stops on Garlent, Greg Betzold, Eric Cornel and Adam Timleck.

The Battalion completes a two-game road trip with a visit to Kingston at 7 p.m. Friday. The game can be seen live in North Bay on TVCogeco Cable 12 and heard on Country 600 CKAT.

BATTALION BULLETS: Right winger Steve Harland, 19, was recalled from the Powassan Voodoos of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, for whom he was the top scorer with 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points in 15 games, and made his OHL debut with the Battalion. A sixth-round choice in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection from the Toronto Young Nationals midgets, he played with Powassan last year, leading the NOJHL in scoring with 42 goals and 53 assists for 95 points and winning rookie-of-the-year and most valuable player honours ... Amadio has a 10-game points streak during which he has eight goals and eight assists. He tied Chris Rowan for 15th place on the franchise scoring list. In 211 games, Amadio has 50 goals and 96 assists for 146 points ... The Battalion went 2-for-7 on the power play. Peterborough was 0-for-6 ... Opening line combinations included Amadio centring left winger Jacob Ball and right winger Mathew Santos, McKenzie pivoting left winger Baird and right winger Hargrave and Zach Poirier centring left winger Brad Chenier and Harland. Kyle Potts centred left winger Kislinger and right winger Brazeau ... Chenier was recalled from the NOJHL's Rayside-Balfour Canadians ... The Battalion was without Austin Kosack, Kyle Wood, David Sherman, Zach Bratina, Brady Lyle and Kyle Moore.
