Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY - Adam Rosales's two home runs and a stellar pitching performance from Matt Maloney, led Louisville to an 8-0 shutout of the Rochester Red Wings at Louisville Slugger Field Tuesday night. The Bats offense broke out of a recent slump to collect 10 hits in the win in front of a nice crowd of 10,227.
The Bats jumped on Rochester starting pitcher Brian Duensing early in the game by scoring four runs in the first. Jerry Hariston led the game off with a double to left and was immediately driven in by Andy Green with a single. Two outs later, with two runners on base, Adam Rosales launched his third home-run of the season into the left field seats making the score 4-0. The home run was Rosales's first at home this season.
The four runs in the first would be all the help Bats starting pitcher Matt Maloney would need tonight. Maloney retired the first 11 Rochester batters he faced and shut down the Red Wing offense all game. The biggest threat against him came in the sixth when Rochester had runners at the corners and two outs, but Maloney was able to strike out Darnell McDonald to end the inning. In the win, Maloney (7-4 4.55) pitched seven shutout innings, giving up only four hits, and striking out seven. He did not walk a batter.
After the rough first inning, Duensing settled down and retired 14 Bats hitters in a row. He would run into trouble again in the sixth when the Bats added three more to their total. With one out, Drew Anderson hit an infield single to shortstop. Newly acquired Aaron Herr picked up his first hit and RBI in a Louisville uniform this year, when he doubled to left center. Herr, who was a Louisville Bat last season, was recently acquired in a trade from Buffalo. With two outs in the inning, Rosales stepped to the plate and hit his second home run of the night over the left field wall putting Louisville in front 7-0.
For Rosales, it was the first time he has homered twice in a game since August 26 of last season, when he was with Double-A Chattanooga. Rosales also tied a career high with five RBI in the game, which he accomplished last season as a member of Single-A Sarasota.
In the eighth the Bats plated another run against Rochester reliever Julio DePaula. Luis Bolivar ripped an RBI single to right, scoring Chris Dickerson. After Hairston was hit by a pitch to load the bases, it looked like the Bats would get more. A strikeout of Green ended the threat and left the score at 8-0.
In the Rochester loss, Duensing (4-7 4.10) pitched six innings, allowed seven hits, and seven earned runs. He also walked one and struck out one. On the offensive side for the Red Wings, McDonald was 1-3 with a single, as was Randy Ruiz who had a double. That double was the only extra base hit allowed by Bats pitching.
The Bats and Red Wings will get together early tomorrow for the third game of a four game series. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. with Bats LHP Adam Pettyjohn (7-2 4.48) scheduled to get the start. He will face off against Red Wings starter LHP Francisco Liriano (3-2 4.14).
