Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY -The Bats swept a doubleheader with the Richmond Braves Monday afternoon. The Bats defeated the Braves 7-0 in game one and took game two 2-1. The twin bill was played after Sunday's rainout at Louisville Slugger Field.
An outstanding pitching performance by lefty Matt Maloney (4-2, 5.23) and a dominating hitting performance by Jay Bruce led the Bats to their first victory of the day over the R-Braves. Maloney pitched a complete game and was two outs shy of a no-hitter when Barbaro Canizares hit a single up the middle in the top of the seventh inning. The Braves would add another hit in the seventh but wouldn't score as Maloney finished the game allowing only two hits, walking two and striking out seven batters.
Bruce finished the first game a triple away from the cycle, with a home run, two doubles, and a single, along with two RBI. He got the Bats on the scoreboard early by slamming his seventh home run of the year, a solo shot off of starter RHP Matt DeSalvo.
The Bats would score five more times in the fifth inning and then Chris Dickerson connected on his first home run of the year in the sixth to put the Bats ahead 7-0.
Braves right-hander, Matt DeSalvo (1-5, 3.86) picked up the loss in game one. He allowed three hits, two earned runs, walked three and struck out one in four innings of work.
In game two, Richmond got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning when Scott Thorman scored on a Wes Timmons' ground out to second. Second baseman Andy Green looked to have a play at the plate but bobbled the ball and was forced to go to first for the out.
Louisville answered back in the fourth inning when Andy Phillips tied the game with a double down the left field line, scoring Bruce. The double extended Phillips' hitting streak to 15 games, which is an International leagues best this season. Phillips would then move to third on a Jolbert Cabrera ground out, setting him up to score on a Ryan Hanigan sacrifice fly, giving the Bats a 2-1 lead.
Tom Shearn (6-1, 3.95) took care of the rest. Shearn pitched six innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, and striking out four batters. Jon Adkins replaced Shearn in the seventh and secured the Bats victory, picking up his seventh save of the season in the process.
Jonathan Rouwenhorst (4-2, 4.08) got the lost in game two for the Braves. He allowed three hits and two earned runs in five innings pitched.
Today's attendance was 13,131, thanks to nearly 8,000 students on education day. It is the second sell-out of the season for the Bats.
Louisville will begin a four-game series with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barres Yankees tomorrow at Louisville Slugger Field, with a 7:05 pm start. The Bats will send LHP Adam Pettyjohn (3-0, 4.74) to compete against Yankees RHP Jeff Marquez (2-4, 6.51).
