International League Player of the Week
Published on May 12, 2008 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Charlotte first baseman Brad Eldred and pitcher Lance Broadway have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period from May 5-11. Charlotte is the first club to sweep a pair of IL weekly awards since Richmond turned the trick with Jonathan Schuerholz and Lance Cormier (July 31-August 6, 2006).
BRAD ELDRED, Charlotte Knights IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Charlotte first baseman Brad Eldred is the International League Batter of the Week for the second time in his career, having previously won the honor with Indianapolis (July 18-24, 2005). Eldred was at or near the top of the League in several offensive categories this week, highlighted by his IL-best 13 hits, 10 extra-base hits, six doubles, and 1.033 slugging percentage. He was also 2nd in home runs (4) and RBI (8) while posting a very respectable .433 batting average. Eldred now leads the International League with 35 RBI on the season, and is near the top of the circuit with 11 homers (2nd), 11 doubles (T-2nd), 23 extra-base hits (2nd), and a .656 slugging percentage (2nd). He also managed to raise his batting average from .250 to .288 this week alone, giving him the 2nd-best average among all qualifiers on the Knights behind League-leader Dewayne Wise (.344).
27-year-old Brad Eldred is in his seventh professional season, and first outside of the Pittsburgh organization. He was selected by the Pirates in the 6th round of the 2002 draft, and reached Pittsburgh for a total of 74 games between 2005 and 2007 (hitting .199 with 14 homers and 30 RBI). This is the fourth straight season he has played in the International League. Eldred is a native of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

LANCE BROADWAY, Charlotte Knights IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK The Charlotte Knights won only three of eight games this week, but two of those were thanks to righty Lance Broadway, who is the League's only hurler to win multiple games since May 5. Making his victories more impressive is the fact that they came against the teams with the top two records in the International League. Broadway defeated IL North leading Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday, holding the Yankees scoreless in 5.0 innings. On Saturday Broadway tossed a complete game against IL West leading Toledo in Game 1 of a doubleheader. In that outing Broadway allowed just three hits and one run with no walks, improving his record on the season to 5-1. Broadway has been one of the League's most impressive pitchers so far in 2008, posting a 1.13 ERA (2nd in the IL) in 48.0 innings of work (4th).
24-year-old Lance Broadway is in his fourth season as a professional pitcher. He first reached the Triple-A level in August of 2006 for one start before spending most of last season with the Knights. In 2007 Broadway went 8-9 with a 4.65 ERA with Charlotte while also making four appearances in the big leagues with the White Sox (going 1-1 with a 0.87 ERA). Broadway is a native of Dallas, TX.
