Bats Double up Tribe 4-2 in Front of 15,011
July 4, 2010 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Louisville Bats plated three runs in the first inning on RBI doubles by left fielder Todd Frazier and third baseman Juan Francisco, while for the second straight night the Bats' defense turned four double plays to hold down the Indianapolis Indians 4-2 in front of a sell-out crowd of 15,011 on Sunday night at Victory Field.
With the loss, Indianapolis' record falls to 44-40, while Louisville improves to 39-45 on the season with the win. The victory also draws the Bats even with the Tribe in the season series which now stands at four wins apiece.
The sell-out crowd of just over 15,000 fans helped push Victory Field over 200,000 fans in the 13 Fourth of July contests played at the Indians' home park since it opened in 1996.
The Bats got off to a quick start thanks to CF Gary Matthews Jr., who led off the contest with a base hit to right and quickly moved into scoring position with a steal of second. SS Zach Cozart followed Matthews' steal with a base on balls before the duo both came around to score on Frazier's two-run double to center. Francisco then extended the Louisville lead to 3-0 when he plated Frazier with a two-base hit of his own one batter later.
Indianapolis would get on the scoreboard one inning later when 1B Jeff Clement led off the frame with a double to left and eventually came home a clutch, two-out double by C Erik Kratz. The run-scoring two-bagger for Kratz, who will represent the Indians in the 2010 Triple-A All-Star game on July 14, was his team-leading 19th on the season.
Louisville would get that run back in the fifth when Cozart led off the frame with a walk, moved to second on a groundout by 1B Yonder Alonso and came around to score on an Indians' throwing error. But the Indians would draw back to within two when in the bottom half of the inning Kratz drew a lead-off walk, moved to second on a fielder's choice, then to third on a single by pinch hitter Brian Myrow and touched home on a sacrifice fly by LF Kevin Melillo.
However, after falling victim to four double plays in their 2-0 defeat to the Bats one night ago, the Indians were again brought down by the twin killing as the Louisville defense quelled Tribe rallies in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings.
Right hander Edinson Volquez, who posted a 17-6 record and 3.21 ERA for the Cincinnati Reds during the 2008 season, earned the victory for the Bats to improve to 2-0 during his current Major League rehab assignment. Volquez (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) allowed just two runs on four hits, while striking out four over five innings of work, before relievers Enerio Del Rosario (2.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 SO) and Jared Burton (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 SO) combined for four scoreless frames of relief with Del Rosario earning his fifth hold and Burton notching his first save.
Tribe starter Charlie Morton (5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) was tagged with the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season after allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks over five innings of work. Indians' relievers Anthony Claggett (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 SO), Daniel Moskos (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) and Brian Bass (1.0 IP, 1 SO) were brilliant out of the Tribe bullpen as they combined to allow just three hits over four scoreless innings of relief.
Indianapolis and Louisville will now face off in a double header at Victory Field on Monday, July 5 beginning at 6:00 p.m. The match-up will feature two seven inning contests with Indians' RHP Mike Crotta and Bats' RHP Chad Reineke expected to get the start in game one, while LHP Ben Jukich is the probable for the Bats in game two with Indianapolis having not yet named a starter for the second contest.
The contests will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and broadcast live on Comcast and Bright House Networks digital channel 81 with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show on WXLW-950 AM begins at 5:40 p.m.
Post-game quotes -- INF Jeff Clement
(on his 1-for-3, one walk night at the plate)
"I've started to take more pitches and I haven't done that all year. Tonight I made a conscious effort to take pitches and the only bad at-bat I had was because I swung at a ball I shouldn't have early on in the count."
(on the sellout crowd of 15,011)
"It's great. There's a lot more excitement in the crowd when you have a packed house. The fans were great today and we would've liked to come away with a win, but it was still a great atmosphere to play in."
(on what the team needs to do to rebound from its sixth consecutive loss)
"We just need to relax. It's just a matter of relaxing and realizing that we're here for a reason. We have the ability to compete at this level and we just need to put it together as a team."
