Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped the first of their four game set with the Buffalo Bisons 10-2 Sunday night. It was Buffalo's first victory at Alliance Bank Stadium since 2009. With the loss, the Chiefs fell to 24-18 at their home ballpark.
Syracuse scored in the first to get out to an early 1-0 lead. With one out, Justin Maxwell plopped a bloop single into left centerfield. Maxwell stole second in the next at bat for his 11th theft of the season. The centerfielder came home on Jason Botts' single to center, giving Botts his 16th RBI.
Buffalo erased the lead with a trio of runs in the second inning. Second baseman Justin Turner knocked in a pair of runs with a two-out single to center to make it 2-1 Bisons. In the next at bat, Buffalo shortstop Luis Hernandez sent a hit down the first base line. The ball rolled past a diving Leonard Davis and went all the way to the wall, allowing Turner to score from first with Buffalo's third run of the inning.
The Bisons added four more runs in the fifth to extend their lead to six. Lucas Duda's fly ball to Maxwell in centerfield was hit deep enough for Hernandez to tag and score from third for Buffalo's fourth run. Fernando Martinez followed by smacking a three-run homer to right, putting Buffalo on top 7-1.
After Syracuse scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, Mike Jacobs put Buffalo back on the scoreboard with a towering home run to right field in the sixth. The solo shot was Jacobs's tenth homer of the year.
Syracuse starter Erik Arnesen picked up the loss, dropping to 2-5 for the year. Arnesen was tagged for seven hits and seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of work. He walked two and struck out three.
Buffalo's Dillon Gee came away with his eighth win. He gave up five hits and two runs in seven innings. Gee fanned six and didn't walk a batter.
Hernandez led the Bisons' offense with three hits and two RBI. Turner, Martinez and Russ Adams also registered multi-hit games for Buffalo.
Leonard Davis went two for four with a pair of singles. Seth Bynum chipped in with a double in the fifth inning for his fourth hit since returning from a 50-game suspension.
The Chiefs and Bisons will play for the tenth time this season Monday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse's Matt Chico (3-4, 4.24) is set to take on Buffalo righthander Tobi Stoner (4-7, 5.28). First pitch will be at 7:00.
