Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Winston-Salem secured a series split with Wilmington, thanks to a resounding 9-3 Dash win in the series finale.
The Dash got things going in a hurry, right in the bottom of the first. Duke Ellis reached on an infield single, then Colson Montgomery walked. That extended Montgomery's on-base streak to 45 consecutive games, between Kannapolis and Winston-Salem. Tyler Osik then reached with his own infield single, loading the bases for Bryan Ramos**.* He worked the count full before drawing a walk, to force Ellis home with the first run of the game. The next batter, *Luis Mieses, smacked a two-run double into centerfield which gave the Dash a 3-0 lead, with Osik settling at third base. A wild pitch saw Osik break for the plate and score, with Mieses moving up to third base. After that, **Terrell Tatum lifted a sacrifice fly into left field, which was enough to score Mieses and give the Dash a 5-0 advantage after just one inning.
Christian Mena did not allow much of a rebuttal from Wilmington. He surrendered a leadoff double to Israel Pineda in the second, but retired the next three Blue Rocks hitters. Then in the third, he sent Wilmington down in order. Mena did allow a pair of base runners in the fourth inning, but picked up a key strikeout to end the inning with a runner on third base.
In the home half of the frame, Harvin Mendoza reached on an error. Keegan Fish then stroked a double into the right field corner. Wilmington threw home to try and nab Mendoza, but he slid in safely, and Fish moved to third base on the throw. A sacrifice fly by Duke Ellis plated Fish, and the Dash pulled further ahead 7-0.
Mena worked a scoreless fifth inning, which turned out to be his last. The 19-year-old allowed just one base hit, three walks, and rang up six Wilmington batters.
Tyler Osik drew a walk to open the bottom of the fifth inning. Later, Luis Mieses ripped a double down the right field line, but Osik had to hold at third base. Osik then scored on a wild pitch, with Mieses advancing behind him to third. After a Terrell Tatum walk, Alsander Womack lined an RBI single into right to put the Dash up 9-0.
The Blue Rocks finally solved Dash pitching in the top of the sixth. Ricardo Mendez reached first on a dropped third strike, before a pair of wild pitches allowed him to advance to second and then third base. That put him in position to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Israel Pineda**.**
Wilmington cut further into the deficit in the top of the seventh inning. Yasel Antuna opened the frame with a sharp double, then advanced to third on a groundout. Cole Daily walked after that. Chase Plymell attempted to pick Daily off at first, but his throw sailed high and out of play, which meant Antuna was awarded home plate and Daily moved to second base. A single by Darren Baker pushed Daily across from second, making it a 9-3 ballgame.
Luis Amaya entered in the top of the eighth for Winston-Salem, and allowed just a single. He returned to pitch the ninth, and shut the door on the Blue Rocks for a 9-3 Winston-Salem victory.
