Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In what will likely go down as one of the greatest pitching matchups of the seasons, the Biscuits (18-24) found themselves on the losing end of a 4-1 ballgame against the Tennessee Smokies (23-19) on Friday night at Riverwalk.

Jaime Schultz (4-2) came into Friday boasting one of the Southern League's best ERAs (2.01) and was set to tango with righthander Frank Batista (5-0), who just so happened to have the league's best ERA (1.28). And while both pitchers showcased some of their best stuff, it was Schultz who ultimately lost out, surrendering a three-run homer to Kyle Schwarber after walking the first two batters he faced in the fifth inning. Schultz finished the game with six walks over five innings of work, while striking out seven.

It was to be Batista's night, and the Dominican was simply sensational. The righty was perfect through the first 4.1 innings, before a single by Tyler Goeddel ended the streak. Batista's only mistake was serving up an RBI-double to Richie Shaffer in the 7th that cut the Biscuits deficit to 3-1. The hit was Montgomery's second and last of the night.

Smokies left fielder Anthony Giansanti would add an RBI-single in the 9th off Mark Sappington to make it 4-1, and though the Biscuits threatened with a pair of walks in the bottom half of the same inning, Goeddel struck out with runners on first and second to end the game.

Each team has now taken a game apiece in this series, with Game 3 coming up tomorrow as Blake Snell (3-0) looks to extend his unbelievable run of 49 scoreless innings on the mound Saturday night at 6:35 PM.
