Jackson Generals News Release

Pensacola, Fla. - Jordy Lara had three hits and an RBI on his birthday, but Pensacola scored six runs in the sixth inning to pull away from Jackson in an 8-5 win on Thursday night in the series opener. The Blue Wahoos sent 10 men to the plate against two different Jackson pitchers, turning a one-run deficit into a five-run lead in the sixth.

The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Edwin Diaz (0-2, 9.31) had struck out four in four scoreless innings of work, but the righty gave up two runs on two hits in the fifth. Juan Silva gave Pensacola the game's first score with an RBI double and Ryan Wright made it 2-0 with a base hit that scored Silva from second.

Jackson (17-22) managed to take a brief lead in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. Pensacola's Layne Somsen, who had walked just eight batters all season coming into the night, walked four-straight Generals with one out. Somsen was pulled after walking Steve Baron with the bases loaded.

Jacob Johnson (2-1, 4.58) allowed the tying run to score when he walked Tyler Smith, the first batter he faced. Jack Reinheimer drove in Jabari Henry with a groundout to make it 3-2. Jackson walked five times in the inning, and the Generals drew a season-high 10 free passes in the contest.

Diaz came back out to pitch the sixth inning, but was taken out after allowing a walk and a single. Pensacola (18-23) put together an impressive rally against Jackson's Jordan Shipers. The first four men Shipers faced all recorded hits. After Juan Perez singled in a run to tie the game, Zach Vincej hit a three-run blast to make it 6-3. It was Vincej's first home run of the year.

Following Vincej's long ball, Cam Maron singled and scored on a triple by Silva to put the Wahoos up four. Shipers finally recorded an out with Beau Amaral up, but the outfielder's sacrifice fly plated another run to make it 8-3.

The Generals fought their way back with runs in the seventh and eighth innings against the Pensacola bullpen. Two batters after Jabari Blash was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh inning, Jordy Lara smashed an RBI double off the wall in left field to make it 8-4. Lara finished the night 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored on his 24th birthday.

Jackson rallied with two outs in the eighth as well, eventually bringing the tying run to the plate. After back-to-back base hits from Jack Reinheimer and Dario Pizzano, Jabari Blash made it 8-5 with a single up the middle. Blash's single extended his hitting streak to nine games and gave him a team-best 19 runs batted in. That was as close as the Generals would get, as Pensacola closer Kyle McMyne (S, 3) was able to bear down and strike out D.J. Peterson to end the threat.

The Generals had a number of missed opportunities throughout the contest. Jackson left men on base in each of the first eight innings, stranding a dozen runners overall. Pensacola starter Keyvius Sampson walked five in five innings, but did not allow a run. Blash's eighth-inning single was Jackson's only hit in 10 at-bats with men in scoring position.

Jackson's lone series in Pensacola this season continues Friday night with game two. Lefty Misael Siverio (1-3, 4.46) gets the ball for the Generals against Tim Adleman (1-3, 1.64), who ranks third in the Southern League in ERA. First pitch from Pensacola Bayfront Stadium is set for 6:35 pm CT, and you can listen to all the action on the TJ Network (AM 1390, FM 94.1 and 94.3) starting with the Tennessee Army National Guard Pregame Show at 6:20 pm CT.

After this 11-game, 10-day road trip, the Generals return home on Tuesday, May 26 for five games with the Montgomery Biscuits.
