Mississippi Braves News Release

Jacksonville, FL - Tyrell Jenkins took a no hitter into the sixth inning, and the Mississippi Braves held off a late Jacksonville Suns rally for a 3-2 win on Friday night at Bragan Field.

Mallex Smith finished the game with three hits, scoring twice, and Matt Lipka stole home to help build up the lead.

Smith led off the first inning with a line drive single to center. Lipka was hit by a pitch, and Seth Loman grounded out to first for an RBI and a 1-0 Braves (23-18) lead.

In the third, Lipka was again hit by a pitch, KD Kang walked and Loman grounded into a force at second. With men on the corners, Loman got caught up in a rundown intentionally, and Lipka broke for the plate for the M-Braves' first steal of home since Mycal Jones did it against Tennessee on July 21, 2014.

The Braves made it 3-0 in the fifth. Smith doubled with one out, stole third, and came in on a Lipka sacrifice fly.

All the while, Jenkins was mowing through the Suns order. With just three walks allowed and no hits through five innings, Suns (15-26) pinch-hitter Matt Juengel led off the bottom of the sixth with a low-hopping single through the middle for a base hit, ending the bid.

Jacksonville threatened a late comeback. Jenkins loaded the bases in the eighth with nobody out and gave way to the pen and Tyler Jones. Jones allowed sacrifice flies to Kenny Wilson and Zack Cox to pull it to 3-2, but he got David Adams to ground out to second with the bases loaded to maintain the lead.

Jenkins (3-2) picked up the win, allowing just two runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out a season-high seven batters and walking three. Jones grabbed his second hold of the year, and Ryan Kelly came on for his 10th save in 11 tries, pitching a scoreless ninth and stranding the tying run at second.

The Braves will try to make it four straight wins on Saturday night at 6:05 PM CT, with right-hander Jorge Reyes (4-2, 1.73) slated to make a spot start against Suns right-hander Austin Brice (1-3, 8.19).

Listen live beginning at 5:30 PM CT on the flagship home of the Mississippi Braves, 103.9 WYAB, and online at MississippiBraves.com.
