Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings have dealt 20-year old left-winger Daniel Bartek to the Everett Silvertips in exchange for a fourth round draft choice in the 2009 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.
A native of the Czech Republic, Bartek scored 22 goals and 36 points in 54 games for the Wheat Kings last season. In 117 career games in Brandon, he scored 56 points including 34 goals.
Today's trade leaves the Wheat Kings with four overage players - forwards Matt Lowry and Andrew Clark as well as defencemen Chad Erb and Matt McCue. WHL clubs are permitted to carry three 20-year olds.
In another move, the WHL team has announced the addition of 18-year old blueliner Darren Bestland to its pre-season roster. A 5'11" 185 lb. Brunkild, Manitoba product, Bestland is coming off a solid 2007-08 campaign with the Selkirk Steelers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
In 60 games last winter, Bestland had three goals, 30 points and accumulated 151 minutes in penalties.
Entering the final weekend of pre-season play, Brandon has 31 players on its roster. Of those, three are goalkeepers, there are ten defencemen and 18 forwards. Among the forward is 19-year old Brandon product Matt Calvert, who leaves this afternoon for the Blue Jackets' National Hockey League Training Camp in Columbus.
Calvert is one of four Wheat Kings headed off to NHL Camps this week. Defencemen Keith Aulie (Calgary), Matt McCue (St. Louis) and Colby Robak (Florida) leave on Thursday.
Robak was a second round choice of the Panthers in last June's NHL draft while Calvert went to Columbus in round five.
On the ice, the Wheat Kings continue preparations for this weekend's home and home series with Moose Jaw. Tickets to Friday's game at Westman Place are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
