Kelowna Rockets News Release

Tyson Barrie is amongst 18 returning Kelowna Rockets this week at Rockets training camp. This year the veteran has taken getting into shape seriously.

I could run forever, he says with a laugh. I ve never been in this kind of shape before.

The dazzling defenceman is heading into his fourth full Western Hockey League season. This year he showed up in great shape after a tough summer of workouts.

"The biggest thing this summer was committing myself to working hard," he said. "I did a lot of cardio and I tried to get stronger. I feel good going into camp."

This summer Barrie trained with former NHLer Gary Roberts, a 21 year NHL veteran who has turned to training athletes post-career and tutored Barrie on what it takes to be a pro.

"It's been an eye opener," said Barrie. "The amount of work it takes and the nutrition to be a professional athlete. I've never experienced that before."

At Rockets camp, Barrie tested near the top of all of the fitness tests.

"Tyson came into camp in the best shape that I've seen him in," said Rockets athletic therapist Jeff Thorburn. "He clearly pushed himself very hard over the summer in preparation for the season."

Of the eighteen skaters who Rockets fans saw last year, six of them are heading off to NHL training camps. Barrie will head to Colorado Sept. 10 to attend the Avalanche's rookie and then main camp.

It will be the second year at Avs camp for Barrie, who flew back to Kelowna on the day of the Rockets season opener and registered an assist last year. This year will be different.

"Last year I knew I was coming back," said Barrie. "This year I'm more confident. I'm going to go in and give it all I can. I have nothing to lose. If I go there and don't make it then I have a great place to play here, try to make the world junior team and help lead the Rockets."

Other Rockets that will be attending NHL training camps this fall are Mitchell Callahan (Detroit), Evan Bloodoff (Phoenix), Geordie Wudrick (Phoenix), Brett Bulmer (Minnesota), Colton Jobke (Minnesota), and Antoine Corbin (Dallas).
