Barons Take Game, Series With 8-3 Win

July 16, 2010 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

The Birmingham Barons added some offense to another stellar pitching performance Friday night at Regions Park and made it two-straight wins over the West Diamond Jaxx with an 8-3 victory.

Justin Greene hit a two-run double with two outs in the second inning to give the home team a 3-1 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Salvador Sanchez led off the inning with a single to left field and Jason Bour followed with a double to give the Barons runners at second and third base. A sacrifice fly by Dale Mollenhauer tied the game at 1-1.

Justin Edwards (3-6, 5.73) who came into the game with an 0-4 record and a 5.16 ERA at Regions Park this season, looked close to unhittable for much of the night while earning his first home victory as a Baron. The lefty tossed 6.2 innings of two-run ball while allowing six hits and issuing two walks. He also struck out three batters. The only blemishes on Edwards's record came with two outs in the inning as Carlos Peguero hit a two-out solo home run in the second inning to give the Diamond Jaxx a 1-0 lead. Peguero later hit a two-out double in the seventh inning and came around to score on Lawson's triple.

Christian Marrero added his third home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the fifth inning. It was the first baseman's first home run 232 at-bats. His last one came on May 15 against Montgomery. Marrero added two more hits, giving himself three hits for the third time in his last four games.

Greene later added a third RBI with a ground out in the seventh inning that plated John Shelby III.

Mollenhauer and CJ Retherford also added an RBI apiece.

Greg Infante tossed 1.1 innings of relief. He allowed a run on two hits and struck out two batters.

Ryan Oulette tossed a perfect ninth inning to close the door on West Tenn.

Dan Cortes (5-4, 6.08) picked up the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits. He walked five batters and struck out four.

The Barons will welcome the Jacksonville Suns to town Saturday night for the first a four-game series. Charlie Shirek (2-3, 3.30) will make his first start since June 10 in Montgomery. Tom Koehler will get the call for the Braves. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM.
