Carlos Peguero hits league leading 17th homer in loss to Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - The Birmingham Barons (8-13) took the finale and rubber game on Friday night against the Diamond Jaxx (7-15) at Regions Park, 8-3. The Jaxx drop their third straight series and remain in the bottom of the Southern League North Division in the second half. The Jaxx and Barons will meet one more time at Pringles Park, July 22-26 for a five game series

Despite the loss, four Jaxx batters had multi-hit games. Brandon Bantz picked up his first career triple and went 2-for-3 with a run. Carlos Peguero finished with a 2-for-4 night with a homer, double and two runs scored. Brandon Haveman and new Jaxx second baseman Matt Lawson each had two hits and an RBI in the loss. Christian Marrero was 3-for-5 with a homer for the Barons. Also, Dale Mollenhauer and Salvador Sanchez had two hit games. Justin Greene drove in three runs for the Barons.

Justin Edwards (3-6) won his first game at Regions Park this season and allowed two runs on six hits in 6.2 innings. Dan Cortes (5-4) dropped the decision and surrendered seven runs on seven hits. Cortes walked five and struck out four.

The Jaxx scored first in the top of the second inning on a solo homer from Carlos Peguero. The homer with two outs in the second frame put the Jaxx up 1-0. Peguero is the active Southern League homerun leader with 17 blasts.

The Barons tied and took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Dale Mollenhaurer brought home Salvador Sanchez with a sacrifice fly to center tying the score at 1-1. With two outs, Justin Greene smacked a two-RBI double to right-center putting the Barons on top 3-1.

After the Barons scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, they added three more in the bottom of the fifth. Christian Marrero led off the fifth inning with a solo homer. The Barons got a sacrifice fly from John Shelby III and another scored on wild pitching, increasing the Barons lead to 7-1.

Carlos Peguero picked up his second extra base hit of the game in the top of the seventh, a double with two outs. Matt Lawson got his first Jaxx RBI with a triple scoring Peguero. The Jaxx trailed 7-2.

The Barons added another run in the bottom of the seventh. Justin Greene tallied his third RBI on the night with a broken bat groundout that scored John Shelby III. The Barons pushed the lead to 8-2.

Brandon Bantz hit his second career triple to lead off the top of the eighth inning and came in to score on a single by Brandon Haveman. The Jaxx trailed 8-3.

The will continue their seven-game road trip and begin a four-game series against the Huntsville Stars on Saturday at 7:05. Making the start on Saturday at Joe Davis Stadium for the Diamond Jaxx will be RHP Blake Beavan (10-5, 2.78 with AA Frisco). Beavan will be making his Diamond Jaxx debut and came to the Mariners in the Cliff Lee trade. LHP Chris Cody (4-7, 5.13) will take the mound for the Huntsville Stars.
