Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL âFor the second time this season the Birmingham Barons have swept the Southern League Player of the Week awards. Outfielder Jeremy Reed was named SL Hitter of the Week and starter Enemencio Pacheco was named the SL Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 8th to August 14th. Reed was also a part of a Barons sweep of the awards earlier in the year as he and starter Tetsu Yofu were named Hitter and Pitcher of the Week for June 27th to July 3rd.
Reed hit .480 (12-25), drove in five runs and scored six times. The rightfielder/centerfielder pounded out five extra-base hits including four doubles and a home run. For the week, the 22-year old had a .760 slugging percentage and a .576 on-base percentage.
Pacheco was honored as the BC Powder Southern League Pitcher of the Week after two fantastic performances. It marks the second consecutive week that the award goes to a Birmingham starter. On August 8, the right-hander baffled the Chattanooga Lookouts for seven and one-third innings in picking up the win. The 24-year-old gave up one run on three hits while striking out five and walking one. Pacheco followed that performance on August 13, when he shutout the Mobile BayBears for six innings on his way to victory, surrendering six hits and striking out five. For the week, Pacheco tossed 13 innings, giving up only one run on nine hits while striking out 10 and walking just one hitter.
On the season, eight different Barons have won player of the week awards. Four have been Hitters of the Week, which include Reed (twice), Ryan Hankins, Carlos Maldonado and Gabe Alvarez and four have been Pitchers of the Week; Yofu, Pacheco, Neal Cotts and Royce Ring.
