Mobile BayBears News Release

Birmingham, Ala. – The Mobile BayBears won the opening game of their four-game series with the Birmingham Barons 4-3 but dropped the final three contests by a combined score of 36-14, including 15-4 in the finale Friday night.

Jon Knott drove in two runs in the top of the first with a single to give the BayBears a 2-0 lead early. However, it would be the only lead they would enjoy on the night.

The Barons tied the game in the bottom of the frame and didn't look back against BayBears starter Cory Stewart. They scored three more runs in the bottom of the third, only one of which was earned, as the BayBears third baseman Danny Bravo made the first of his two errors on the night.

"We aren't playing good defense right now," BayBears manager Craig Colbert said. "They are putting our pitchers in tough spots and they aren't able to make the pitch to get out the jams."

The Barons added four more runs in the fourth as Carlos Maldanado and Guillermo Reyes had back-to-back two-run hits, giving Birmingham a 9-2 lead.

With his team trailing 10-2 entering the sixth, Jon Knott drove in his third run of the game with his 24th homerun of the season.

The Barons answered with two more runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth off of reliever Roger Deago.

Knott added his 25th homer in the eighth inning to become the third BayBears player to hit two runs in one game, joining Todd Donovan and Jake Gautreau.

BayBears Jose Nunez gave up the final three runs for the Barons on the night in the bottom of the eighth, making the final 15-4.

The BayBears now head home to open a four-game series with the Huntsville Stars beginning Saturday night at 7:05. Chris Oxspring (8-4) will start on the mound for Mobile.

Saturday night is Faith Night at Hank Aaron Stadium. 4-HIM will follow the game with an on-field concert for all in attendance.
