July 23, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A superb outing from Barons starter Matt Tomshaw and a late, clutch base hit sent the Birmingham Barons (45-53) to a 1-0 Tuesday night win over the Chattanooga Lookouts (45-55) at Regions Field.
Tomshaw, who came into the day with a 0.95 ERA and 31 strikeouts at home this season, was dealing early on and never slowed down. He had eight strikeouts in six innings and finished going seven scoreless with a season-high 10 strikeouts.
After Tuesday night's performance, Tomshaw has now gone seven scoreless innings in three consecutive outings and 23-straight innings without allowing a run.
The Southern League leader in RBI came up huge in the bottom of the sixth. Barons first baseman Gavin Sheets poked a ball to right for a one-out, RBI single to score Nick Madrigal and go up 1-0.
For Sheets, it was his 65th RBI of the season and put him two ahead of Chattanooga designated hitter Ibandel Isabel for tops in the league.
On the other side, Lookouts Southpaw Scott Moss continued his season dominance with the strikeout. Moss, who came in third in the Southern League with 111 strikeouts, had eight punch outs through the first five innings in the no decision. Coming in, Moss was second in strikeout percentage at 28.2 and had an 11.02 K/9 rate.
Three Barons finished with two hits, including Madrigal at 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and the lone run. He is now batting .370 at the plate in 35 games with the Barons.
The win was the Barons sixth shutout of the season and their second at home.
The Barons will resume the Chattanooga series Wednesday evening, starting at 7:05. Left-hander John Parke (2-0, 2.67) will make his sixth start with the Barons.
WJQX-FM 100.5 will be the home of the Barons on Wednesday. Fans can tune into the Coca-Cola Pregame Show starting at 6:50 p.m.
The Birmingham Barons are the proud Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The Barons will open the home portion of their 2019 season, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of Michael Jordan's lone year in baseball, against the Tennessee Smokies at 7:05 p.m. April 10 at Regions Field.
