Fleming Completes Biscuits, 2-1

July 23, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Montgomery Biscuits News Release

KODAK, Ten. - In what was easily the fastest nine-inning game of the year at two hours and six minutes, Josh Fleming (9-4) became the first Biscuit pitcher in 2019 to throw a nine-inning complete game in the Biscuits' (64-37) 2-1 win over the Tennessee Smokies (43-57) on Tuesday night at Smokies Stadium.

Fleming was gunning for his fourth win over his last five appearances, but after working a scoreless first, he allowed a one-out triple to Zach Davis, who then scored on Gioskar Amaya's RBI-groundout and made it 1-0 Smokies at the end of the second inning.

The Biscuits were fruitless through the first two innings against Fleming's counterpart Cory Abbott (5-7), but in the third, after a four-pitch walk to Thomas Milone, Vidal Brujan stepped up and clubbed a two-run blast to right to put the Biscuits ahead, 2-1. The round-tripper was Brujan's second Double-A bomb, both coming off Abbott.

The Smokies would collect a pair of one-out hits against Fleming in the fifth, and had runners at second and third with one out. Christian Donahue then grounded a ball to first, which was nabbed by Tristan Gray. The Biscuits' first baseman, who saw the runner at third Amaya caught in between third and home, then ran at the baserunner, tagged him out near third, and then tagged out Connor Myers-the baserunner at second-who was trying to advance, for an improbable, inning-ending 3-unassisted double play.

The Biscuits, who recorded just two hits all night and had just one man reach over the last 21 at-bats, turned another double play in the sixth, and left the rest to Fleming, who dominated the Smokies to the tune of the lone run on five hits, no walks, and six strikeouts, completing his second complete game of the season on a 1-3 comebacker off the bat of Vimael Machin in the bottom of the ninth.

Fleming became the second Biscuit to throw a complete game this season (Riley O'Brien), and first to throw a nine-inning complete game since Benton Moss did it against Jackson back on July 30, 2018. Fleming and his southpaw teammate Kenny Rosenberg are now tied for the second in the league in wins with nine.

The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium for a 10-game home stand on Saturday, July 27 when it will be Christmas in July & MAX Fireworks. The first five games will be against the Birmingham Barons, and the last five will be against the Chattanooga Lookouts.

The rest of the 10-game home stand will include a Lil' Crumbs Dress Like a Player Wristband Giveaway on Sunday, July 28; Tiger Night featuring a T-Shirt Giveaway on Thursday, August 1; BBQ Bash featuring a Grill Set Giveaway & MAX Fireworks on Friday, August 2; International Beer Day & MAX Fireworks on Saturday, August 3; And Lil' Crumbs Dress Like a Player Backpack Giveaway on Sunday, August 4.
