Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL â The Birmingham Barons put on a hitting clinic as they defeated the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx by the score of 10-1 in a rain-shortened game in front of 1,768 fans on Monday evening at the Hoover Met. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth with no outs due to heavy rain. In the game, every Barons starter wrapped out a hit and either scored a run or drove in a run
The Barons set the tone for the night by scoring three times in the first off West Tenn starter Mike Nannini (5-3). In the inning, Chad Durham scored on a wild pitch, Darron Ingram drove in Danny Sandoval with a sacrifice fly and Scott Bikowski doubled in Ryan Hankins.
Birmingham wasn't done yet as they plated single runs in the second on a Hankins RBI single and in the fourth on a suicide squeeze bunt by Durham that scored Juan Piniella. The final blows were struck in the bottom of the fifth as D-Jaxx reliever T.P. Waligora came on to relieve Nannini. Waligora failed to retire a batter and gave up five runs on five hits and a walk. RBI's in the inning came on a pair of two RBI doubles by Carlos Maldonado and Guillermo Reyes and a RBI single by Piniella.
The only thing that could cool off the Birmingham bats was the rain as it came in the middle of the offensive onslaught and ended the game. Brian West (3-4) picked up the win for the Barons after throwing five innings and giving up just one run on three hits while striking out two.
Tomorrow evening, the Barons wrap up the four-game series by sending out LHP Neal Cotts (7-2, 2.18) to face RHP Angel Guzman (1-2, 3.54). Game time is 7:00 and all the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
