Knoxville Smokies News Release
Jacksonville, Fla. - Jeremy Cummings (6-4) held Jacksonville scoreless on just one hit over eight shutout innings and registered a season high 12 strikeouts as Tennessee (33-25) blanked Jacksonville (26-31) 6-0 Tuesday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Cummings retired the first ten batters he faced until Shane Victorino's bloop single fell into center field with one out in the fourth. Victor Diaz then reached on a John Nelson error, putting runners at second and third and presenting the Suns with their best scoring opportunity of the night. Cummings proceeded to strike out Tarrick Brock and Brennan King to end the threat. Cummings finished strong, setting down the final ten batters he faced and striking out a Smokies season high 12 batters. Cummings threw 115 pitches, 79 for strikes.
Tennessee opened the scoring against Tom Farmer in the second inning. Corey Erickson and Yadier Molina hit consecutive doubles to give the Smokies the only run they would need. Papo Bolivar's two out single in the third was followed by a Bucky Jacobsen home run to put Tennessee up 3-0.
Caonabo Cosme added a solo home run in the fifth inning, and Papo Bolivar doubled home two more in the sixth.
Tennessee returns home Thursday to face division leading Carolina. St. Louis closer Jason Isringhausen will make a rehab start for Tennessee Thursday night. Carolina will send Donnie Bridges (3-1, 3.57) to the mound in the first game of a four game set.
