Sevierville, Tenn. - The St. Louis Cardinals will send closer Jason Isringhausen to the Tennessee Smokies to begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment. It is not known how many appearances he will make with the Smokies. Isringhausen has not thrown a single pitch this season due to off-season shoulder surgery.

The 30-year-old right-hander will make at least one rehab start at Smokies Park before he rejoins the Cardinals pitching staff. Tennessee was chosen as his destination largely because the Smokies are the only minor league affiliate of the Cardinals who are playing at home on Thursday.

"I told them I'd go wherever they wanted me to go and this what they came up with,'' Isringhausen told ESPN.com.

Over the years, Isringhausen has had five operations -- three on his elbow, including ligament transfer surgery, and two on the shoulder -- both to repair the labrum.

Isringhausen had 32 saves and a 2.48 ERA with St. Louis in 2002. He was signed by the Cardinals as a free agent in December of 2001. He notched 34 saves with Oakland in 2001 and 33 with the A's in 2000. Originally drafted by the Mets in the 44th round of the 1991 draft out of Lewis and Clark (Idaho) State College, Isringhausen made his major league debut with the Mets in 1995.
