Birmingham Barons News Release
The Barons hit four home runs but couldn't over come a seven-run fourth, falling in the first-half opener to the Mississippi Braves 7-5 in front of 2,720 fans at Trustmark Park.
Jared Mitchell hit his first home run of the night in the third, crushing a solo shot against starter Mitch Atkins. The long ball was his first since April 23rd, but it would not be his last on the night as the Barons took an early 1-0 lead.
The lead would be short lived, however, as the M-Braves benefited from four Barons' errors behind starter Scott Snodgress (7-6, 5.03) to score seven runs in the fourth, sending 12 men to the plate. Only two of the runs would be earned against Snodgress, who lasted just 3.1 innings in his shortest outing of the season.
Down 7-1, the Barons refused to go quietly, using the long ball to force themselves back into the game. Mitchell started the rally with his second homer of the day, another prodigious shot to right field and his third of the season. Andy Wilkins would follow suit in the sixth, crushing his team-leading 9th home run of the season, a two run shot. Tyler Saladino would hit fourth homer of the season later in the inning to bring the Barons within two runs at 7-5.
The Barons had chances to tie or take the lead, most notably loading the bases with two outs in the 8th, but Mark Lamm struck out Mike Blanke to end the threat as the M-Braves picked up their first win against the Barons in six chances this season.
Atkins (1-1, 4.67) picked up the win, allowing five runs on six hits over 5.2 IP. Lamm recorded the final four outs to pick up his 9th save of the season. With the win, the M-Braves improved to 39-32 and 1-0 in the first half while the Barons fell to 44-27 and 0-1 in the first half.
The Barons will look to pick up their first win of the second half tomorrow night as RHP Nick McCully (6-1, 2.57) takes the hill against RHP Michael Lee (3-5, 4.63). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM CDT.
