Birmingham Barons News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Despite a three-hit afternoon from Blake Rutherford, the Birmingham Barons (28-45) dropped a 5-2 decision to the Chattanooga Lookouts (39-34) on Sunday at AT&T Field.
Rutherford, ranked as the No. 8 prospect in the White Sox system according to MLB Pipeline, singled in the second, fifth and seventh innings to record his 15th multi-hit effort of the season. The former first-round selection owns a .364 clip at the plate across his past 21 games.
The Barons jumped on top in the opening frame when Ti'Quan Forbes brought home Luis Robert with a sacrifice fly. However, Chattanooga responded in the bottom half of the inning and went on to score five unanswered runs to take a 5-1 lead through four.
Barons starter Matt Tomshaw (L, 2-4) suffered the loss after the left-hander allowed five runs on nine hits across four innings of work. The veteran southpaw struck out seven in the defeat.
Rutherford came around to score in the fifth when Nate Nolan delivered a sacrifice fly to right to make it a 5-2 game, but Birmingham could not cut into the deficit further.
Lookouts right-hander Johendi Jiminian (W, 3-2) collected the win after the Dominican product scattered eight hits and surrendered two runs (one earned) over 6.1 innings.
Right-handed relievers Luis Martinez and Codi Heuer logged scoreless appearances in relief of two innings apiece to keep the Barons within striking distance late. However, Birmingham left the potential tying run in the on-deck circle to close the game as Chattanooga's Ty Boyles locked down his first save of the season.
Luis Robert, who entered the game with a home run in three consecutive contests, went 2-for-4 at the plate but saw his streak come to a close. David Cook is the last Barons player to record home runs in four straight games when he accomplished the feat between May 29 - June 2, 2009.
The Barons and Lookouts will conclude their five-game slate to open up the second half of the season Monday night. Birmingham will send left-hander John Parke (0-0, 0.00) to the mound in his Double-A debut against Chattanooga southpaw Scott Moss (4-3, 3.45).
First pitch in the series finale is set for 6:15 p.m. CT at AT&T Field and the game will be broadcast via WJQX-FM 100.5. Coverage will begin at 6 p.m. with the Coca-Cola Pregame Show.
