BIRMINGHAM -- Five days ago, the Montogmery Biscuits tied the Birmingham Barons' 2004 Southern League high by scoring 18 runs in a game. Tuesday night at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, the Barons broke the tie.

Every Baron had at least one hit and scored at least once as the Barons stomped the Biscuits, 19-2, in the opener of a four-game series. The Barons broke their season high by accumulating 21 hits. The club scored in every inning but the fifth and sent 53 hitters to the plate.

The Barons' assault on Biscuits starter Chris Seddon began in the first inning with a two-run homer by Nate Murphy. They added one in the second, three in the third and knocked him out in a two-run fourth. Seddon allowed eight runs on 10 hits and suffered his sixth loss.

Reliever Carlos Hines stranded runners at the corners in the fifth but allowed two hits and three walks in the sixth and departed with two runs already home and the bases loaded. Willie Glen spelled Hines and allowed abases-loaded double that scored all of the inherited runners. Glen then allowed two runs of his own in the seventh. John Benedetti allowed four unearned runs in the eighth thanks to two errors by Frank Moore in the inning. Barons third baseman Richard Paz capped a great night with a three-run homer. Paz went 4-for-5 with a walk, two doubles, a homer and five RBIs.

Three teammates collected three hits each and three more added two.

Meanwhile, left-handed starter Heath Phillips threw a tremendous seven-inning start in which he allowed three hits and a walk, facing only two over the minimum and allowing no one past first base.

The Biscuits finally scored against Nik Lubisich in the eighth, when Birmingham native Dan DeMent lashed a two-out, two-run double down the left field line.

In game two of the series, the teams play a Wednesday matinee at 11:00 a.m. with Biscuits righty John Webb taking on righty Eduardo Villacis.
