Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Mitch Wylie and the Birmingham Barons earned a series split with a 4-1 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts in front of 5,125 fans on Friday evening at the Hoover Met.

Wylie (3-3) threw an impressive game going 8.2 innings and giving up just one run on seven hits and five strikeouts. It was his longest outing of the year and his most impressive start to date. On top of his stellar performance on the mound, the defense was flawless behind him and made several spectacular plays to keep the Lookouts off the bases.

The Barons got on the board in the first when Juan Piniella reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Jeremy Reed and then scored on a Scott Bikowski RBI single. The lead moved to 2-0 when Carlos Maldonado scored on a RBI single by Danny Sandoval in the fourth and was cushioned further in the seventh on RBI singles by Gabe Alvarez and Maldonado.

With the Barons up 4-0, Wylie continued to cruise all the way into the ninth inning. He promptly got the first two batters to ground out to second but couldn't complete the game. Wilmy Caceras and Dernell Stenson reached on bloop singles before Jim Chamblee stroked an RBI double to score Caceras and chase Wylie from the game. Jim Bullard came on and retired pinch-hitter Bryan Anderson to pick up his third save of the season and preserve Wylie's third win of the season.

Daylan Childress picked up the loss for Chattanooga after throwing 5.0 innings and giving up two runs on four hits and five walks.

The Barons welcome the Mobile BayBears to town tomorrow evening for a short two-game series by sending out LHP Byeong An (3-1, 2.95) to face RHP Duncan McAddo (3-6, 4.30). All the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
