G-Braves Scorch Suns

Mississippi Braves News Release

GREENVILLE, SC -- James Jurries went 3-5 including the game winning two-run single in the eighth inning as the Greenville Braves knocked off the Jacksonville Suns 4-2 Friday night at Greenville Municipal Stadium. G-Braves starter Adam Wainwright went seven innings and allowed only two hits but did not factor into the decision as the win gave Greenville three of four and a series win over the Suns.

The G-Braves pulled ahead 1-0 in the second inning with a run off of Suns starter Joel Hanrahan. Bryon Jeffcoat led off with a double and went to third on a Ramon Castro single. With two outs, Wainwright scorched the first pitch he saw to bring in Jeffcoat.

Jacksonville got their first hit of the night, a double down the left field line from Reggie Abercrombie in the top of the fourth. That put runners at second and third as Jason Repko was already aboard after being hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Nick Alvarez then sent a hot shot into the hole that second baseman Richard Lewis made a diving stop on, but the throw to first was late and two runs scored.

Greenville jumped on reliever Greg Bauer (5-4) for three runs as nine batters came to the plate in the eighth. Lee Evans sent a double into the gap in right-center and scored the game-tying run on Ramon Castro's third single of the night. Lewis sacrificed Castro to second, and Pete Orr received an intentional walk. Newly called up Charles Thomas then squirted a single the other way to load the bases for the G-Braves' hottest hitter Jurries. The first baseman Jurries did not disappoint as he sent a shot to right that plated the winning runs.

Kevin Barry (4-3) pitched the eighth to earn the win, and Billy Sylvester got the final three outs for his eleventh save.
