Hoover, AL - Jared Price's bases loaded single in the fourth inning delivered the game winning runs as the Birmingham Barons (11-13, 51-43) blitzed the Jacksonville Suns (9-14, 46-47) by a score of in front of 2,074 fans Sunday night at Regions Park.
Birmingham jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Tyler Kuhn singled, stole second base and dashed to third base on a Jose Martinez groundout. Kuhn raced home on a Brandon Short groundout to third base for the first run of the game.
Jacksonville answered in the second inning when Ben Lasater blasted a leadoff home run to left field, 1-1.
The Barons took the lead back in the bottom of the second inning when Kyle Shelton drew a leadoff walk, stole second base advanced to third on a Greg Paiml single to left field. Shelton darted home on Jake Oester's double play as the Barons reclaimed a one-run edge, 2-1.
The Suns knotted the game 2-2 in the third inning when Chris Gutierrez ripped a double into the left field corner and scampered to third base on Chris Coghlan's groundout to shortstop. Kevin Mattison lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Gutierrez.
Birmingham grabbed the lead for the final time in the fourth inning when Seth Loman walked and advanced to second base on a Shelton single. Following and infield hit by Oester that loaded the bases for Jared Price, who lashed a single to left field that scored Loman and Shelton, 4-2.
The Barons added five runs in the eighth inning when Oester began the frame with a single before Price doubled off the right field wall. Justin Greene drove in Oester and pushed Price to third base on a single up the middle. After Greene stole second base, Martinez drilled a single to center field that plated Price and Greene. A RBI gapped double by Short allowed Martinez to race home from first base. Following a groundout by Loman that advanced Short to third base, a fielding error on a Shelton groundball allowed Short to scurry home, 9-2.
Birmingham reliever Johnnie Lowe (6-3) earned the win for the Barons after he hurled 4.0 shutout IP with 1 hit, 2 walks and 1 strikeout. Nathan Jones (SV, 6) garnered the save after he tossed 2.0 scoreless IP with 3 hits, 1 walk and 1 strikeout. Starter Terry Doyle was handed a no-decision after leaving the game in the third inning due to an undisclosed injury. He permitted two earned runs on 2 hits, 2 walks and 1 strikeout before leaving the game.
Graham Taylor (2-5) was issued the loss after he surrendered four earned runs with 6 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts in 5.0 IP.
The Barons and Suns complete their six-game series at 7:05 p.m. Monday night at Regions Park. Left-handed pitcher Justin Edwards (3-3, 4.50) gets the nod for Birmingham while southpaw Brad Hand (8-2, 3.89) heads to the bump for Jacksonville.
