Lancaster Stormers News Release

On Saturday evening, Lancaster helped Matt Wright out of two jams with line drive double plays.

They tried to do the same for Cesar Carrillo in the second inning on Sunday evening but misfired, and the Long Island Ducks went on to score seven two-out runs in the inning, cruising to a 12-6 win over the Barnstormers at Bethpage Ballpark.

Long Island trailed, 3-1, heading into the bottom of the second inning. J.R. House grounded Carrillo's first pitch into left, and Matt Padgett followed with a double sliced into the left field corner to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Carrillo (3-9) retired Erick Monzon on a shallow fly to center as the runners held. Kraig Binick punched a liner toward right, but Gilberto Mejia went up to make the catch for the second out. Mejia, who started both of the Saturday double plays, thought he saw an opportunity to double Padgett off second, but fired the ball past Iggy Suarez, allowing two runs to score.

Carrillo walked the next three batters and sailed a wild pitch to the backstop as Kennard Jones crossed the plate with the go-ahead run at 4-3. John Rodriguez clocked a three-run homer down the right field line, making it 7-3, and Carrillo walked Matt Esquivel before leaving.

House doubled off Ross Peeples to extend the inning. Matt Padgett hit a high bounder toward right field which was chased down by Mejia, but he had nowhere to throw as House scored with the seventh run of the inning. Monzon hit into a force play to end the onslaught.

Lancaster got two runs back in the third. Adam Calderone whacked his fifth Lancaster home run leading off. Matt Watson and Brandon Jones each doubled down the right field line to produce another tally as the Barnstormers chased Ducks starter Mark Diapoules out of the game, cutting the Long Island lead to 8-5.

The Ducks put the game away with three in the bottom of the fourth, again, after the Barnstormers nearly turned in a fine defensive play that would have ended a scoreless inning. With two outs and two aboard on walks, Monzon hit a sharp grounder on the left side. Travis Metcalf made a diving stop to his left but, in trying to hurry a throw to Mejia, skipped the ball into right field as a run scored. Binick doubled to right center for two more and an 11-5 lead.

Jeremy Hill (3-1) worked three innings of relief to earn the win for the Ducks.

The rubber game of the series comes up on Monday evening at 7:05. Lancaster will send Yunior Novoa (3-2) to the mound against right-hander Joselo Diaz (5-5). The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com.

NOTES: Tommy Everidge extended his hitting streak to 11 games...Mejia has hit safely in nine in a row...Mejia has eight steals in that time and leads the league with 31, a total that ties Lloyd Turner for the fourth highest mark in club history...Rodriguez has 24 RBI against Lancaster on the season, three short of an opponents record.
