Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn. - August 7, 2011) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (15-7, 47-38) lost the suspended game from Saturday but defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (7-16, 43-43) in the regularly scheduled contest on Sunday. Bridgeport lost 7-6 in the first game of the series while the home team won 4-1 in the second contest.
After the first game continued, in the fifth inning with the bases loaded, Prentice Redman drew a walk to give the Bluefish a 6-5 lead.
Southern Maryland, though, responded by scoring a couple of runs in the seventh. Travis Garcia doubled to leftcenter and Casey Benjamin deposited a two-run drive to rightcenter to account for the final runs.
Eduardo Morlan (1-0) came out of the bullpen to pick up the win for the road team. He threw an inning and a third of no run baseball out of the bullpen after replacing starter Edward Rodriguez. Southern Maryland's starter allowed six runs in four-and-two-thirds. Jim Ed Warden picked up his 21st save of the season for the winning side.
Pat Ryan surrendered five runs in five frames yesterday but did not factor in the decision today. Antonio Alfonseca (2-3) gave up the final two runs of the contest in the seventh to take the loss.
In the regularly scheduled contest, Bridgeport jumped out to a 3-0 lead courtesy of two homers. In the second, Wes Bankston smacked his 19th homer of the year. The solo shot to leftcenter gave Bridgeport the early lead. With a runner on in the third, Steve Moss sent a two-run drive to left to get the Bluefish the three run advantage.
Brian Barton hit a solo shot to leftcenter in the sixth to cut the deficit to two; but Bridgeport added an insurance run in the eighth to secure the victory.
Raymar Diaz (5-0) had a strong performance as he tossed six innings and allowed one run in earning the victory. Chris Rivera tossed two scoreless frames out of the bullpen and Juan Rincon notched his 17th save of the season by throwing a perfect ninth. Michael Schlact (5-3) took the loss as the Bluefish produced three runs in seven innings against Southern Maryland's starter.
